DIY Hay Wreath Christmas Enrichment for Rabbits & Other Small Pets

DIY Hay Wreath Christmas Enrichment for Rabbits & Other Small Pets

Christmas can be an expensive time of the year, but what doesn’t have to be costly is your small animal’s enrichment!

Enrichment can vary from toys that encourage your small animal to eat more (hay) to rabbit boredom breakers that encourage your rabbit to climb, tunnel or dig.

Both mimic their natural foraging behaviour that they would present in the wild and make a great Christmas gift for your pet.

How do you make a DIY hay wreath for rabbits and small pets?

To make a DIY hay wreath for rabbits, cut a cardboard ring, wrap it with jute string and Tasty Timothy hay, then tuck in your pet’s favourite treats.

What do you need to make a hay wreath for rabbits?

To make a DIY hay wreath you need a box of Tasty Timothy or Moreish Meadow hay, your small pet’s favourite treats, cardboard, scissors, jute string, a plate, a bowl and a pencil.

  • 1 x a box of Tasty Timothy Hay or Moreish Meadow Hay
  • A handful of your small animal’s favourite treats
  • An empty cardboard box (a HayDay box works perfectly!)
  • Scissors
  • Jute string
  • A plate and a bowl
  • Pencil

How do you make a hay wreath step by step?

Follow these steps to make a DIY hay wreath for your rabbit or guinea pig.

  1. Take an empty piece of cardboard and place a plate on top as a stencil. Draw a circle on top of the cardboard.
  2. Next, take a bowl and draw around it inside the circle you have just drawn with the plate.
  3. Very carefully, cut out both circles, starting with the larger one first. You will be left with something that resembles a car wheel.
  4. Next, cut a length of jute string and loop it round the circle you have just cut out making sure there is enough length so you can wrap it around the cardboard a number of times.
  5. After that, take a small handful of Tasty Timothy hay and place it on top of the cardboard ring.
  6. Then carefully wrap the jute around it until the circle is covered. You can just tuck the jute back on itself to secure it and use another piece. Repeat this step until the wreath is full and bushy. Make sure to carefully trim off any excess.
  7. Time for the bow!
  8. Take the long stem hay (Tasty Timothy works extremely well for this) and make a loop on one side of the bow and secure it with jute string. Repeat for the other side then attach it to your wreath.
  9. Finally, take your small animal’s favourite treats and tuck them into the jute string that holds the hay to the wreath

Why is enrichment important for rabbits and small pets?

Enrichment is important for rabbits and small pets because it gives them the mental and physical stimulation they would get from foraging in the wild. In the wild, rabbits typically spend 80% of their waking time foraging or eating, so enrichment for pet rabbits is pretty important! According to the RSPCA, enrichment is known to:

  • Improve the quality of your rabbit’s living area
  • Give your rabbits the freedom to explore, exercise and forage
  • Provide mental and physical stimulation

What are the best enrichment accessories for small animals?

Is a DIY hay wreath safe for rabbits and guinea pigs?

A DIY hay wreath is safe for rabbits and guinea pigs as long as you only use natural, edible or chew-safe materials such as hay, plain cardboard and untreated jute string. Avoid glue, tape, tinsel, ribbon and plastic, remove any pieces that become loose or are chewed off, and check the wreath daily. Our guinea pig enrichment guide has more safe ideas for cavies.

Which hay is best for a hay wreath?

Long stem Tasty Timothy hay is best for a hay wreath because the coarse stems hold their shape when wrapped and make for good chewing. Moreish Meadow hay is a softer alternative that suits fussier eaters. Our guide to the benefits of long stem hay explains why stem length matters for teeth and digestion.
