Alfalfa Hay For Small Pets

Barn dried, long stem alfalfa feeding hay is an excellent forage choice for breeding, young and growing rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as those that are unwell or recovering from injury.

Made from the finest quality, our coarse, green and leafy Alfalfa Hay (also known as lucerne), is a legume that is higher in protein and calcium to support health and development.

Why Feed Alfalfa Hay To My Small Animal?

  • Alfalfa is best suited to young, growing and breeding animals
  • It can be fed in very small quantities to adult pets ocasionally to add enrichment
  • Contains ample fibre to assist with digestive and dental function
  • Palatable and dust extracted for extra deliciousness!
  • Barn dried for freshness

*Alfalfa Hay is higher in nutritional value than our other varieties of hay, therefore is not suited to all small pets: we recommend introducing this hay type gradually over a period of 7 to 14 days. And always speak to a vet or nutritionist first if unsure. This feeding time frame applies to introducing any new additions (such as hay, pellets or leafy greens) to your small pets diet.

What Is Alfalfa Hay?

Alfalfa Hay is a legume, not a grass, which can be fed to young (up to 6 months), growing or nursing small animals - as well as those that are recovering from an injury or pets that are unwell. Alfalfa Hay is richer in minerals (calcium) and higher in protein to support health and development.

Mature adult pets can also enjoy our Alfalfa Hay but in small quantities for enrichment.

At HayDay, we grow all of our grass on our farm in Yorkshire, meaning we have full control of our hay from field to nibble:

• We barn dry our hay for consistently high quality hay all year round

• Our Alfalfa Hay is coarse and crunchy which is great for your small animal's teeth and tummies. The Lucerne leaf is where your small pets will find all the protein and goodness!

• We work closely with our in house nutritionist Briony to ensure that you're feeding your small pet's the best!

  • Who Should Be Fed Alfalfa Hay?

Alfalfa Hay is a suitable feeding hay for:

    • Young (up to 6 months)

    • Growing

    • Lactating

    • Recovering from injury

    • Unwell

Adult pets can enjoy Alfalfa Hay when fed in small amounts and when fed in addition to their base hay of Timothy Hay or Meadow Hay.

  • Alfalfa Hay Storage Tips

Keeping your small pet's hay fresh is key, in terms of preserving its quality and to keep your small animals safe. So when storing our barn dried, fresh Alfalfa Hay - we would recommend:

    1. Storing hay in a cool and dark place which is well ventilated

    2. Ensure your hay can breathe (our boxes are perfect for this!)

Storing your hay in these recommended conditions will help prevent mould and stop it from spoiling.
