Alfalfa Hay For Small Pets

Our barn dried, long stem Alfalfa feeding hay is an excellent forage choice for breeding, young and growing rabbits, guinea pigs and other small pets, as well as those that are unwell or recovering from injury. Made from the finest quality, our coarse, green and leafy Alfalfa Hay (also known as lucerne), is a legume that is higher in protein and calcium to support health and development.

Why Feed Alfalfa Hay To My Small Animal?

  • A feeding hay for rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals
  • Particularly suited to young, growing and breeding animals but can be fed in smaller quantities to adult pets to add enrichment
  • Contains ample fibre to assist with digestive and dental function
  • Palatable and dust extracted for extra deliciousness!
  • Barn dried for freshness

As Alfalfa Hay is higher in nutritional value than our other varieties of hay, we recommend introducing this hay type gradually over a period of 7 to 14 days. This time frame applies to introducing any new additions (hay, veggies or pellets) to your small pets diet.

Why HayDay

We know what we’re doing! Self confessed grass enthusiast brothers Tom and Mike have over 10 years experience, with some of the best racehorses in the world enjoying our hay.

Feeding Guidelines

Alfalfa Hay is most suited to young, growing and breeding small animals.

Small pets (like rabbits, guinea pigs, degus and chinchillas) are herbivores that thrive on a plant based, grass-led diet. Adequate forage consumption is essential and should make up most of your small pets diet (about 80-90%).

For full feeding guidelines specific to your pet see our Feeding Guidelines + Nutrition page.

What Is Alfalfa Hay?

Alfalfa Hay is a legume, not a grass, which should be fed to young (up to 6 months), growing or nursing small animals - as well as those that are recovering from an injury or pets that are unwell. Alfalfa Hay is richer in minerals (calcium) and higher in protein to support health and development. Adult pets can also enjoy our Alfalfa Hay in moderation for a more diverse diet and added enrichment.

At HayDay, we grow all of our grass on our farm in Yorkshire, meaning we have full control of our hay from field to nibble:

• We barn dry our hay for consistently high quality hay all year round

• Our Alfalfa Hay is coarse and crunchy which is great for your small animal's teeth and tummies. The Lucerne leaf is where your small pets will find all the protein and goodness!

• We work closely with our in house nutritionist Briony to ensure that you're feeding your small pet's the best!

  • Why Is Feeding Hay Important for Small Animals?

Small animals should have a diet that reflects feeding 80 - 90% of premium quality, dust extracted hay.

We know that finding a suitable hay source for your small pet's can be difficult, which is why at HayDay we:

    • Have invested in barn-drying facilities

    • Dust extract our grass products

    • Have the seal of approval from our nutritionist Briony

Please refer to our feeding guidelines for further advice.

  • Who Should Be Fed Alfalfa Hay?

Alfalfa Hay is a suitable feeding hay for:

    • Young (up to 6 months)

    • Growing

    • Lactating

    • Recovering from injury

    • Unwell

Adult pets can enjoy Alfalfa Hay when fed in small amounts and when fed in addition to their base hay of Timothy Hay or Meadow Hay.

  • Which Animals Love Our Alfalfa Hay and Why?

There are a variety of different animals who love our Alfalfa Hay, including:

    • Rabbits

    • Guinea Pigs

    • Chinchillas

    • Degus

    • Plus many more!

Our Alfalfa Hay is great for supporting your small pets in growing strong and healthy. Not to mention how its coarse and crunchy stems are the perfect way to wear down their continuously growing teeth!

  • Alfalfa Hay Storage Tips

Keeping your small pet's hay fresh is key, in terms of preserving its quality and to keep your small animals safe. So when storing our barn dried, fresh Alfalfa Hay - we would recommend:

    1. Storing hay in a cool and dark place which is well ventilated

    2. Ensure your hay can breathe (our boxes are perfect for this!)

Storing your hay in these recommended conditions will help prevent mould and stop it from spoiling.
