  • Guinea Pig Feeding Guidelines

Small animals (such as guinea pigs) are herbivores that thrive on a grass-led, plant based diet. In the wild, guinea pigs have access to different foods - which is why its essential that we replicate this inside our homes.

A healthy guinea pig diet should consist of:

    • 80 - 90% of premium, dust extracted hay

    • 5 - 10% of guinea pig specific pellets that are rich in vitamin C

    • 5 - 10% of leafy, green vegetables

Unlimited amounts of hay should be offered to your guinea pigs and at free choice. By replenishing hay frequently, it will help to keep your guinea pig's digestive and dental function happy and healthy.

  • Which Hay Types Can I Feed My Guinea Pig?

There are a variety of hay types suitable to guinea pigs, which all vary in different tastes and textures. Suitable guinea pig feeding hays include:

    • Timothy Hay

    • Meadow Hay

    • Ryegrass Hay

    • Alfalfa Hay (Please refer to our Alfalfa product page for more feeding information)

Hay is a vital component in your guinea pig's diet as it's a main source of any key nutrients that they need. At HayDay, you can rest assured that our hay is premium quality, barn dried and dust extracted for happy and healthy pets!

  • How To Store Guinea Pig Hay

Keeping your guinea pig's hay fresh is key, in terms of preserving its quality and to keep your small animals safe. So when storing our barn dried, fresh hay - we'd recommend:

    1. Storing hay in a cool and dark place which is well ventilated

    2. Ensure your hay can breathe (our boxes are perfect for this!)

Storing your hay in these recommended conditions will help prevent mould and stop it from spoiling.
