SMALL PET FEEDING AND NUTRITION
SMALL PET FEEDING AND NUTRITION
Which type of hay is best for my small animals?
Tasty Timothy Hay is a favourite with rabbits, guinea pigs and more! Loved for its coarse stems and beautifully green Timothy heads - it promotes great gut and dental health.
Moreish Meadow Hay is great not only to nibble but it pairs as a comfy bed too! Adored by the fussiest of small animals, it's also high fibre to support healthy gut health.
Ryegrass Hay is a palatable feeding hay for rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals due to its sweet taste and stalky stems! Its enhanced nutrition means it's suitable to be fed in addition to other hay types for enrichment or to top up nutrition where required.
Alfalfa Hay is suitable for young (up to 6 months), breeding or growing small pets - as well as those unwell or recovering from injury. Its high protein and calcium content means it's a great feeding hay for health, growth and development!
Not sure which your pet will like best? Why not try one of our Hay Taster Packs so your small animals can try both of our Timothy and Meadow Hay first and decide for themselves which they prefer
Can I feed a range of different hay types to my small pets?
Absolutely! Diversifying your small animal's diet is important as it improves their hay intake and prevents them from getting bored.
We would recommend feeding your small pet both Tasty Timothy and Moreish Meadow Hay as your small animals 'base' hay, and introduce Alfalfa and Ryegrass Hay additionally (in moderation) to enrich their diet further.
Always introduce any new hay types gradually, over a period of 7 to 14 days.
What quantity of forage should I feed to my pets?
All our packaging and product pages contain specific feeding guidelines for feeding forage to your rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and degus. As a general rule there should always be clean, fresh forage available, at free choice, for your small animals. Most small pets eat about the size of their body in forage each day, but always check packaging and product pages for specific requirements.
If you are unsure, always check with a vet or nutritionist, or check out our handy guide on feeding and nutrition.
What should a healthy small pet diet look like?
Every small animal should have access to:
- Fresh, clean water daily
- An unlimited amount of premium quality, fresh hay every day. Always remove any unspoiled hay.
- A suitable environment for your pet to live in - using the recommended enclosure sizes
Treats should be offered in moderation to your small animal, and fed ad-lib to their unlimited hay and water.
This may vary between different small animals, therefore, if you're ever unsure please seek advice from a vet. The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund offers great advice on healthy diets for pet rabbits.
Why is feeding great quality hay so important?
Premium quality hay is essential for small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs to keep their sensitive and complex bodies moving! A high fibre diet encourages correct gut movement and not to mention how it helps to wear down their continuously growing teeth!
All of our hay is grown on our farm in Yorkshire, we look after the whole process ourselves from growing the grass to packing your orders. If you'd like to find out more about our story, farming or our team - take a look on our social media channels or drop us a message!
Can rabbits and guinea pigs eat the same hay?
Rabbits and Guinea Pigs can eat the same hay! Both Timothy Hay and Meadow Hay are great choices as they promote great denta, digestive and gut health for small animals. Our Moreish Meadow Hay has proven favourable by guinea pig owners to use as a bedding hay.
Should rabbits have access to hay all day?
Yes! Rabbits and other small animals should have access to hay at free choice, at all times. The recommended feeding amount is the equivelant to their body size, however for great gut health and healthy teeth, we would encourage you to feed your small animal more hay.
For more advice, refer to our feeding guidelines and nutrition for small pets.
What's the best way to encourage my small pets to eat more hay?
Hay is an essential part in any rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and degus diet. Feeding hay can be as simple as putting it in their space and enclosure. To avoid boredom at feeding times, small animals are known to love enrichment, therefore you can try feeding hay in various different ways such as; hay racks, balls or feeders! We have some great enrichment ideas for your small animals across on our blog.

GENERAL
Why choose HayDay?
At HayDay we do things differently, and here are just a few reasons why we think you’ll love us:
- We grow all our own grass on our farm in Yorkshire so we know exactly what has happened to our hay from the field to your small animal.
- We barn dry our hay using green energy. Traditional farming techniques means that hay is left to dry in the field, which causes inconsistency and is hard to manage due to British inclement weather. We have much more control meaning we can guarantee the best quality hay for your small animal, all year round.
- We are 100% plastic free… Just cardboard, paper and other environmentally friendly materials. Enough said!
- Our hay is grown specifically with small pets in mind. We have fields on the farm dedicated to growing Moreish Meadow Hay and Tasty Timothy Hay for your pets. It is looked after from start to finish making sure it is just right for them.
