How to Keep Small Pets Calm on Bonfire Night

Did you know 69% of UK adults will be taking measures to help relax or prepare their pets for bonfire night?

We spoke to some of our ambassadors to see what they recommend to keep their rabbits and guinea pigs safe this bonfire night.

How to keep your small pet safe this Bonfire Night:

1. Enrichment to distract your small pet during fireworks

Enrichment is always the best type of boredom breaker, but more so when there is the chance of loud bangs and strange noises outside of their usual environment. Try offering a variety of hay.

Here’s some easy enrichment ideas for small pets:

2. Calming Classic FM for pets

This is the most common ‘calming’ tactic used by small animal owners. Classic FM has two programmes running from 5pm-9pm on Saturday 4 November and Sunday 5 November boasting calming music for your furry friends.

You can simply instruct your Alexa to play Classic FM in your small animal’s set up or find it on 99.9-101.9 on your radio.

3. ‘Block out’ the noise

You can try to block out any outside noise! Draw any curtains and blinds and for extra protection try rolling blankets and placing them on your window sills or hanging blankets behind your curtains to help muffle out any excess noise. Another alternative to Classic FM would be to keep music or the TV on.

4. Try a calming spray

Our friends Ronnie and Daisy’s bun-mum recommended the Pet Remedy De-Stress and Calming Spray.

“(Sarah) used it a lot after Ronnie was neutered and his hormones were wild! It really helped calm him down”

5. Company

Like humans, when it’s a stressful time, sometimes you just can’t beat company. As small animal parents, you know your furry friend the best!

A summary of how to keep your small pets calm this bonfire night;

  • Keep them entertained and almost ‘distracted’ from all the noise outside
  • Stock up on extra blankets - they will come in handy to help your set-up
  • Music and/or TV - Don’t forget to check out our suggestion of Classic FM’s Pet Classics
